Grant and the 21st regiment encamped by a creek on the Perry and Naples road about three and a half miles east of Perry during Grant's March to Fame from Springfield to Quincy in July, 1861. Mark Brown will portray General Grant riding into Perry from the east at 11 am Saturday, October 18. He will stop at the historic Church of Christ building wher he will dismount and invite all who are interested to join him in the church to learn more about the March to fame. The Gothic Revival style church, constructed in 1878, is sided with wood board-and-batten and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. Immediately following General Grant's presentation at the church, a re-enactment of the campaign rally pole raising that took place in 1860 supporting Abraham Lincoln for president will take place in the village park. A brass band will "add much to the occasion, not only by their beautiful music but by their shouts for Lincoln" (Pike County Journal MAy 31, 1860).
